One of the biggest shifts in my fitness journey had nothing to do with workouts, macros, or supplements.
It was who I followed on social media.
If you’ve ever scrolled Instagram after the gym and suddenly felt discouraged instead of inspired, this is for you.

The Problem With “Perfect” Fitness Content
A lot of fitness content online is:
- Highly edited
- Filmed at peak lighting and angles
- Posted by people with completely different body structures
And while there’s nothing wrong with that, constantly consuming content from bodies that don’t resemble yours can quietly mess with your confidence.
You start comparing:
- Your waist to theirs
- Your legs to theirs
- Your progress to their genetics
- And that comparison almost never feels fair — because it isn’t.

Why Body-Type Similarity Matters
Following gym girls with a similar body type helps you:
- Set realistic expectations
- See progress that actually feels attainable
- Understand how muscle sits on a body like yours
- Normalize how bodies look outside of perfect poses
It shifts your mindset from “Why don’t I look like that?” to “Oh — this is what progress can look like for me.”
That distinction is powerful.
Inspiration vs Comparison
There’s a big difference between:
- Content that inspires you to show up
- Content that makes you feel behind

When you follow people with similar proportions, heights, builds, or muscle distribution, you’re more likely to:
- Relate instead of compare
- Feel motivated instead of discouraged
- Appreciate your own progress
Fitness should feel empowering — not like a constant reminder of what you’re “not.”
How This Changed My Fitness Journey
Once I intentionally started following women who:
- Lifted like me
- Had similar builds
- Shared realistic progress

I noticed:
- Less body-checking
- Less negative self-talk
- More confidence walking into the gym
- More patience with my progress
It reminded me that bodies grow, change, and respond differently — and that’s normal.

How to Curate a Healthier Fitness Feed
A few simple shifts:
- Unfollow accounts that consistently make you feel bad
- Follow creators with similar body types or goals
- Look for progress photos, not perfection
- Save content that motivates, not intimidates
Your feed should support your mental health, not sabotage it.
Final Thought

You don’t need to look like someone else to be making progress.
Following gym girls with your same body type isn’t about limiting yourself — it’s about relating, not comparing.
And that mindset shift alone can be one of the biggest game changers in your fitness journey.
Until next time…
xoxo,
Jenna
